KHOLMSKY DISTRICT

Kholmsky urban district is located in the southwestern part of Sakhalin, on the coast of the Tatar Strait. The capital of the region, the city of Kholmsk, is an industrial and an important transport hub of the island with its year-round seaport, a road junction, and a railway station connecting not only the western and eastern branches of Sakhalin but also the island with the mainland by ferry.

The area abounds in mountain ranges and numerous rivers flowing into the Tatar Strait. Moving from Kholmsk towards the village of Chekhov, you will be able to observe picturesque plains, fields, and meadows stretching towards the sea or sky.

Green hills speak of the name of the city of Kholmsk (Russian kholm means a hill). The only sea ferry crossing in Russia ensures the connection between Sakhalin Island and the mainland. Fish and seafood production and processing are one of the leading sectors of the local economy.

KHOLMSKY PASS

If you approach the city from the east, visit the monument to Soviet soldiers. It is located at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level and symbolizes the crest of a wave with a weapon at the top. This is the place of the battles for the liberation of Sakhalin in August 1945.

SERPENTINE ROAD

Climbing the Kholmsky Pass, enjoy a breathtaking view of the Kholmsky port and the bucket harbor. Then go down the picturesque serpentine road – one of the wonders of Sakhalin.
